In the land of Malheim, Rangers looking to take a break from combat can engage in such professional trades as treasure hunting, horse taming, and cooking. Gaining a thorough understanding and grasp of these professions acts not only as a welcome change of pace, but can also bring unexpected benefits to Rangers’ battle capabilities.
Forging Weapons
After defeating some behemoths and scavenging them for materials, you can have Brokk the master blacksmith forge a shiny new weapon. Most of the behemoths you run into have different elemental properties, and the weapons forged from them will also gain similar properties. According to their practical combat needs, Rangers may decide to craft weapons with various stats. Carefully planning which weapons need to be crafted can vastly improve your success in battle.
Forging Armor
Of extreme value to the Rangers, armor also requires materials from behemoths to forge. It is classified according to the relevant behemoth sets, with each armor set being composed of five parts. Once Rangers have a complete armor set, there is a high chance to activiate one to two special properties of the set. Rangers refer to these properties as Special Skills. These skills usually correspond to behemoth traits. Apart from its mere robustness, Rangers should also pay attention to whether an armor's Special Skills will mesh well with their individual fighting style.
Evolving Equipment
As their battles with behemoths grow in intensity, Rangers often need to evolve their weapons and armor instead of crafting new equipment. Behemoth materials obtained in battle can be used in evolving one's equipment to strengthen its capabilities, and at certain levels you are even given the option to alter its stats. In this way, your weapon can match your own development.
Enhancing Equipment
Any good Ranger will take every opportunity to improve their weapons and equipment. Through battle after battle, Rangers accumulate general and behemoth materials. To realize the full potential of these materials, the Rangers’ researchers and blacksmiths have developed the craft of enhancement. This craft allows players to use all kinds of behemoth materials along with large volumes of general materials to strengthen their equipment stats—and while these alterations may be somewhat lesser than those from evolution, equipment that continues to be enhanced allows for some surprising improvements.
Alchemy
There are few left today who still practice alchemy as passed down over generations. Rangers can seek Leia the Alchemist for assistance. Adhering to the age-old principle of equivalent exchange, Rangers must bring Leia base alchemy materials as well as a certain amount of silver for her to perform her work. Through alchemy, Rangers can obtain all kinds of incense and candles, and more. These items hold a wide range of uses by which Rangers can benefit; such as in increasing material drop rates through prayer, and mitigating the corrupting effects of Wild Souls.
Altering Rings
Rangers can wear all kinds of rings found through treasure hunting, each containing a miraculous power and the ability to endow Special Skill points upon the wearer (much like other equipment). Rings are an effective means by which Rangers may strengthen their battle capabilities. Through alchemy, Rangers alter their rings to adjust those Special Skills deemed lacking. However, owing to the limitations of alchemy techniques, Leia is unable to exert complete control over the alteration—hence Rangers do not know whether the end result will show the stat improvements desired.
Empowering Necklaces
As with rings, the necklaces Rangers collect from the Lost Isle are also able to augment the wearer’s combat ability. Basic stats strengthened by the necklace can be improved by alchemists through consumption of a certain amount of materials. They also, however, follow the limitations of alchemy techniques: the stats strengthened are selected at random from amongst a wide range of stats. If you wish to achieve a more targeted stat improvement, then larger volumes of alchemy materials must be offered; a cost which must be carefully considered.
Farming
George's Farm welcomes each and every Ranger to grow crops upon their own plot of land. Of course, Farmer George will take a small cut of the harvest. The rich and fertile soil in the Valley of Dawn permits all types of crops to be grown, and Rangers can add fertilizer to further improve their yield. Planting crops on the farm provides Rangers with large amounts of cooking ingredients, but some fruits, spices and meats will still require a journey into the wilderness to acquire.
Cooking
Food is one of mankind's true necessities, yet for a Ranger, it holds an even greater significance. Engaging in battle on a full stomach leads to improved combat abilities, but these benefits aside, no Ranger has ever said no to a well-cooked meal. Cuisine is separated into three categories: main courses, dishes, and desserts, each with different recipes and individual effects. Rangers who do not wish to cook themselves may purchase food prepared by Chef Avril.
Fishing
One can find streams, rivers, and lakes all over Malheim. Within them live all manner of fish and other aquatic life. A rod and bait may be used by adept explorers to catch them. Apart from catching fish to cook, one may also reel in valuable ornamental fish to serve as gifts for companions or to be sold in the market. Sitting peacefully by a river with a fishing rod in hand can be a relaxing break from a Ranger's normal duties.
Treasure Hunting
Malheim has an illustrious history, and a territory that once reached far and wide. While large areas are now being besieged by behemoth attacks and have been reduced to a wild no-man’s land, they still hold many uncovered treasures. Explorers seek to collect treasure maps indicating the location of these rarities, following clues within the wilderness toward the hidden bounties. According to treasure-hunting Rangers, one must enlist Hatchet's help if they are to obtain an accurate location. Through this profession, one may find bountiful ore veins and mineral deposits, as well as ability-boosting rings.
Hunting
Aside from the Rangers, the hunters of Malheim also venture into the wilderness. However, the prey they hunt are not behemoths but common beasts. In spite of this, Rangers can still serve to learn many skills from them, such as how to track prey, how to focus on its weak points, and how to how to gain more material rewards following the kill. Whether beast or behemoth, Rangers know that in the end, they're all the same: prey that must be defeated.
Taming Horses
Rangers in the past would commonly ride into battle on horseback, however their horses were too easily frightened by the larger behemoths, making them a liability in battle. As such, Rangers now hunt in the wilderness on foot. However, this is not to suggest that Rangers consider horses unimportant; a fast steed allows for rapid travel between different areas, getting the Rangers to where they are needed. Wild horses can still be found in the wilderness, migrating between different areas to avoid behemoths, and can be attracted through the use of Horse Incense. Following this, one may carefully begin to tame them. Once caught and tamed, horses can be bred to produce new generations. Whether the foals will be stronger than their parents, however, is a matter that depends on the breeding selections made by the Ranger—with a little luck thrown in.
Harnesses
A wise man once said, "A horse is only as good as its harness". Equipped with an enchanted harness, even an average horse can perform like a thoroughbred. Each of the main factions within the kingdom have their own extravagant, ornate harnesses bearing the unique features of their faction. Only Rangers who have earned the approval of a faction may acquire their harness. But perhaps it is the horses themselves who are the most particular when it comes to harnesses, as a horse will gain more or less bonuses depending on the harness. This, perhaps, is their way of showing approval of your choice in harness.
Costumes
Armor made from behemoths only offer so much in terms of aesthetics. When you grow tired of them, perhaps it is time to try a costume instead. Designed by the most skilled tailors and blacksmiths in Malheim, these unique and luxurious outfits even possess magical effects, leading to their huge popularity throughout the kingdom. Costumes have become a sign of power, wealth, and individuality. The appearance of weapons can also be changed with weapon skins. If you're on close enough terms with Balen and other veteran Rangers, you can even obtain skins of their weapons.
Currency
The most commonly used currencies in Malheim is Wōden gold and Dirham silver, referred to as just gold and silver by the populace. The established exchange rate between the two is 1 gold coin for every 10 silver. Silver is widely used in daily life while gold is used for buying expensive products. Apart from these two, Rangers can get their hands on an even more valuable currency: diamonds. These precious gems hold extremely high value and can be used in purchasing the most precious goods (or exchanged for gold coins at a 1:10 ratio). The source of diamonds is still something of a mystery. Legend has it that they are created through an alchemic technique that only a few have mastered.
Trading
To allow Rangers to allocate their resources more efficiently, Douglas put into practice a regulated trading policy. Rangers may put their spare materials, cooked dishes and other items up for sale to other Rangers in the market via the Provisions Merchant. Excluding extremely rare valuables, Rangers can set their prices only within the ranges dictated by official Ranger guidelines. Such trade regulations help to guarantee the safe economic development of each Ranger and prevent internal disputes.
